Bronfenbrenner went further to compare the conduct of school children in the USSR, USA, Britain, West Germany and Switzerland and his results ‘strongly indicate that collective upbringing does achieve some of its intended effects — at least at the school age level’.55 In more detail, his results indicate that

Soviet children are much less willing to engage in anti-social behaviour than their age-mates in three Western countries (the United States, England and West Germany). In addition, the effect of the peer group was quite different in the Soviet Union and the United States. When told that their classmates would know of their actions, American children were even more inclined to take part in misconduct. Soviet youngsters showed just the opposite tendency. In fact, their classmates were about as effective as parents and teachers in decreasing misbehaviour.56
